Computing with Words

This design-science studio explores computing with words, a fuzzy statistical concept used to semantically process intuitive human data. After an initial project kick-off, student pairs will complete tutorials to master fuzzy statistics, or fuzzistics. They will then apply these concepts by engineering and testing prototypes with Raspberry Pi and EmotiBit.

Students must apply by email prior to semester start. Due to specialized hardware needs, enrollment is limited to ten students on a first-come, first-served basis.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this design studio, you will have:

  • Learned about fuzzy logic-based computing with words and perceptions, as a kind of embodied intelligence,
  • Became familiar with demo-driven research within a group of two by designing, engineering, and evaluating a focusing guide, and
  • Developed an understanding of somatic memory, by implementing interactive Raspberry Pi and EmotiBit prototypes.
