Seminar Scientific Communication in Document Image Analysis: Reading, Writing, and Presentation Skills

Topics (among others):

  • Ground-Truthing
  • Evaluation Metrics and Strategies
  • Historical DIA
  • HCI Aspects (Interactive tools)

As a novel approach, the seminar will be held as a kind of mini-conference. We will meet once in the beginning of the semester and every student will choose a topic. Then, supervised by an expert in that field, the student will prepare a seminar work (short thesis). In a peer-reviewing approach, each student will read theses of two other students and perform short reviews like in a real conference. Finally, all presentations will be presented at a “conference day” at the end of the semester.

Learning Outcomes:

In this seminar you will read a recent scientific publication on cutting-edge research in Document Image Analysis. Your task will be to understand this work and write a short essay (8-12 pages) about this paper. In a conference-like peer reviewing process you will get feedback from other students and learn how to write and review scientific papers. Finally, a presentation will be given by each participant.

Outcomes:

  • Intensive knowledge on Document Analysis
  • Reading scientific papers
  • Writing scientific papers
  • Reviewing
  • Presenting
