Cloud Computing

This new course on Systems aspects of Cloud Computing is proposed in the context of the Swiss Joint Master in Computer Science of the Universities of Bern, Neuchâtel and Fribourg (http://mcs.unibnf.ch). It targets students with a background in undergraduate distributed systems and operating systems, wishing to get a deep understanding of the concepts and design techniques used in large-scale cloud infrastructures. These infrastructures, typically formed of geographically distributed and very large data centers, power most of todays’ applications and large company services. The course will cover a range of core systems aspects at the heart of cloud computing systems, and link them to the traditional services offered by operating systems. We will consider in particular resource management, fault tolerance, isolation, synchronization, naming, resource sharing and virtualization, communication and networks, and energy efficiency. The solutions presented in class will be based on examples from the industry and from innovation projects and startups in Switzerland, Europe and the World, and on the detailed study of the algorithms at their core.

Learning Outcomes:

The course will provide students with an up-to-date view of the techniques and paradigms used by major Internet companies to operate their infrastructures, and by companies using cloud computing solutions to build efficient and scalable systems on these platforms. It will provide students with a clear view of new trends and techniques for operating and using cloud computing and data center systems, and of the associated fundamental algorithms and protocols.
